Indoor and outdoor tankless water heaters are built for different environments. Compare location rating, venting, weather exposure, freeze planning and service access before choosing the installation site.

Exact location rating
Use only a model whose documentation allows the planned indoor or outdoor location. The two ratings are not interchangeable.
Venting and air
Indoor gas models require model-approved combustion-air and exhaust planning. Outdoor-rated models discharge outdoors without an indoor vent route.
Weather and freezing
Outdoor placement adds direct wind, rain, snow, freezing temperatures and exposed-pipe protection to the site review.
Utility and service access
Either location must support the required fuel, power, water, drainage and safe access for inspection and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions
Can an indoor tankless water heater be installed outdoors?
Only when the exact model documentation explicitly permits outdoor installation. Do not assume that an indoor and outdoor version are interchangeable.
Does an outdoor gas model need venting?
An outdoor-rated gas model does not use an indoor exhaust-vent route, but its exhaust area, clearances and placement still must follow the model instructions and local requirements.
Is an outdoor model a good fit in every climate?
No. Local temperature, wind, precipitation, snow, exposed piping and the consequences of a power or fuel interruption all need review against the exact model documentation.
Which location delivers hot water faster?
Neither rating guarantees a shorter wait. Pipe length and the route between the heater and frequently used fixtures are major factors.
Can landscaping or an enclosure hide an outdoor unit?
Only if the exact clearances, exhaust conditions and service access remain compliant. Do not enclose or screen the unit based on appearance alone.
